Sacrifice, schmacrifice!

I can't imagine that for an all-knowing god-child, who knows that he'll soon be going to heaven to live it up, knows that he will be worshipped for thousands of years, and feels that he is doing a great service to the entire population of the world FOREVER, this would be considered a sacrifice. It's more of a symbol than anything.

As alluded to in the cartoon, countless other people have endured much worse for much more humble causes. To think that this was 'the ultimate sacrifice' is really just cheapening the idea of both 'ultimate' and 'sacrifice'.

Many christians that I have spoken to, and heard speak on the matter cite the resurrection of Jesus as the cornerstone of their belief, yet there is no credible evidence to support that this ever happened, AND Jesus is definitely not the only religious figure to have been resurrected.

I wonder what makes the fairytale of zombie jesus stand out as more factual or convincing?

Sorry, but I'm just not getting it...

Enjoy your ex-pagan-but-now-usurped-by-a-major-religion holiday!

Worship a rabbit who lays chocolate eggs as you ask "what would zombie jesus do?"

  1. Happy Easter Alan!

Sorry you cannot understand the significance of what Jesus did. I am not sure why the fact that Jesus would be worshipped and living in heaven would mean that what Jesus did was any less of a sacrifice. A sacrifice is something that you give up for others. Philippians 2:6-8 states it very well.

You also said, ”As alluded to in the cartoon, countless other people have endured much worse for much more humble causes. To think that this was 'the ultimate sacrifice' is really just cheapening the idea of both 'ultimate' and 'sacrifice'.”

So does that mean that those who gave the 'ultimate sacrifice' in fighting for our country should not be remembered either? Many of them died relatively quick and painless deaths compared to Jesus (though some didn’t) and have the ‘eternal’ honour and glory associated with what they have done. Should we only be remembering the ones that you, or others gauge as having made a really big sacrifice and had nothing to gain from what they did?

You also said, ”Many christians that I have spoken to, and heard speak on the matter cite the resurrection of Jesus as the cornerstone of their belief, yet there is no credible evidence to support that this ever happened, AND Jesus is definitely not the only religious figure to have been resurrected.”

So, which is it? No credible evidence for Jesus’ resurrection OR many religious figures have definitely been resurrected? AND is a contradiction!

    Enjoy the long weekend!

  2. As far as the 'ultimate sacrifice' goes, I'm not saying that a person who gives their life for a good cause doesn't deserve recognition. It just doesn't seem to me that the Jesus character did anything particularly special, that's all.

As far as you last question goes, I see no reason to believe that Jesus is anything more than a fictional character, let alone to worship him. As I said, the Jesus character is not the only religious character to have resurrection in their story. I didn't say that other religious figures definitely have been resurrected. I said that "Jesus is definitely not the only religious figure to have been resurrected", by which I meant to point out that his story is not unique. So, no credible evidence for Jesus actually existing and the story isn't even unique. This is not a contradiction.

It does seem weird that we celebrate the zombification of a fictional jew through a celebration of fertility and perpetuating a lie about a giant rabbit who delivers chocolate eggs... I'm just glad to have a four day long weekend!

  3. Thanks for the reply Alan. You really love the zombie theme hey? I assume you have seen Shaun of the Dead? Very amusing...

Anyway, do not mean to be picky, but you have denied the blatantly obvious...so I feel I need to say something...

I suspected all along what you ‘meant’ to say, but it was what you did say that I said was a contradiction...and it is a contradiction. In saying ”Jesus is definitely not the only religious figure to have been resurrected” you are also saying that Jesus is definitely one of the religious figures who has been resurrected. Don’t worry, I am sure it is not what you meant...but it flows logically from your statement. This is a contradiction to ” there is no credible evidence to support that this ever happened” I just thought it was amusing. I assume that if you started blogging that there were definitely heaps of resurrected religious figures, then they might kick you out of SA!

I might add that your statement, ” I see no reason to believe that Jesus is anything more than a fictional character” is very much you opinion (as you are probably aware!), but not the opinion of most serious historians (Christian or not).

Who ever said that it was a giant rabbit? I always assumed it was normal size.
